Using AI to study without outsourcing the thinking

Reading a good explanation feels like understanding. Trying to use it is what builds understanding. Here is how to make a model push you toward the second.

AI Place Hub 43

A clear explanation is the quickest way to feel that you understand something. Using it is the quickest way to actually understand it. A model can help with either, and it is easy to slide into the first without noticing.

Ask it to quiz you

I am learning [topic]. Ask me one question at a time, wait for my answer, then tell me what I got wrong and why. Start easy and get harder if I do well. Answering beats rereading.

Explain it back

Write your own explanation in a few sentences, then ask: where is this wrong or incomplete? Do not rewrite it, just point at the problems. You keep the writing and gain a reviewer.

Ask for the usual misconception

What do beginners usually get wrong about this? It points at the traps a tidy explanation glides over.

Attempt the problem first

For maths, code or any exercise with a right answer, try it yourself before you look at any answer. Then ask for feedback on your attempt and leave the solution for later. If you are stuck, say hint only.

Check it against your material

Models get details wrong. Compare anything you will be tested on with your textbook or course notes, and use the model as a study partner and not as a source. The habits in how-to-check-what-an-ai-tells-you apply.

Read your course rules

Some courses restrict AI use for graded work. Read the policy before you use it there.
