Free or paid AI: which plan fits you

A decision guide for choosing between a free tier, a paid plan and the API, based on how you use AI and not on price lists that go stale.

AI Place Hub 28

Prices and limits change every few months, so this guide compares the kinds of plan and lets you check the current numbers yourself.

OptionGood forWatch out for
Free tierOccasional questions, learning, trying a toolMessage limits, slower or smaller models, fewer features
Paid personal planDaily work, longer files, better modelsMonthly cost, limits that still exist at the top
Team or business planShared projects, admin control, privacy termsPrice per seat, needs an owner to set it up
API with usage billingApps, scripts, high volumeCost grows with tokens, needs some coding
Local modelPrivate data, offline work, no per-message feeHardware, setup time, weaker answers on hard tasks

A simple test

Take three real tasks from your week. Run them on the free option. If it handles them, stay free. If it fails on quality, length or limits, try the paid plan for one month and cancel if you do not use it.

Count what you use

Note how often you hit a limit, how long your inputs are, and which features you rely on. The token calculator helps you estimate API cost for a given text.

Protect your budget

Prefer plans with a spending cap. Check for auto-renewal and set a calendar reminder before it renews. Watch for trial offers that convert to paid.

Free is not private by default

A free service is often paid for with your data or attention. Read where-your-data-goes-in-ai-apps before you put anything sensitive into it. For free ways to start, see ways-to-use-ai-without-paying.
