Can you tell if AI wrote a text?

Why AI detectors are unreliable, what signs people notice, and what to do if a tool says your own writing is AI.

Short answer: nobody can tell for sure. Detection tools give a probability, and a probability is not proof.

Why detectors get it wrong

A detector looks for statistical patterns such as predictable word choice and even sentence length. Careful human writing can show the same patterns, especially from non-native speakers, from people who write formally, and from short or technical texts. The result is false accusations. The same tools also miss AI text that has been edited by a person.

Signs people notice

None of these proves anything, but together they raise suspicion: sentences all of similar length, generic claims with no example, no personal detail, smooth transitions between every paragraph, lists of three, a tidy summary at the end, and facts or sources that do not exist. The last one is the strongest sign, because a person rarely invents a citation.

If a tool says your own text is AI

Stay calm and keep evidence: drafts, version history, notes, sources you read. Ask which tool was used and what its stated error rate is, then ask for a human review. Offer to explain your text out loud. Detector scores alone should not decide a grade or a job.

If you are checking someone else

Ask questions about the content instead of running a tool. Someone who wrote it can explain a choice, a source or a number. Treat a detector result as a reason to talk, not as a verdict.

A better habit than detection

Add specifics to your own writing: real numbers, names, dates, and what you personally saw or did. That makes text better and also makes it clearly yours.

Notes from the author

If you want to see how a detector scores your text, test two or three different tools. The results often disagree.
