AI for school and exams: rules, citing and checking

What to check before you use AI for school work, how to cite it, and how to use it so you actually learn instead of copying.

Schools and universities treat AI very differently. Some allow it with a note, some ban it for graded work, and some leave it to the teacher. Finding out takes five minutes and can save you a failed assignment.

Find the rule first

Look in the course syllabus, the school academic integrity policy or ask the teacher directly. Ask a specific question: may I use AI to explain a topic, to check grammar, to draft text? The answer is often different for each one. Keep the answer in writing.

Use it to learn

The safest and most useful use is as a tutor: ask it to explain a topic another way, quiz you, or point out the weak spot in your own paragraph. using-ai-to-study-without-outsourcing-the-thinking shows prompts that keep you doing the thinking.

If you must cite it

Many styles now have a format for citing AI. It usually names the tool, the version or date, the prompt, and where you used it. Ask your school which style they want. Do not cite the AI as a source of facts. It is a tool, and you still need real sources for anything you claim.

Check every fact

Models invent references, quotations and page numbers. Open each source you plan to cite and confirm it exists and says what you claim. how-to-check-what-an-ai-tells-you lists quick checks.

Do not hide it

If the rules require disclosure, disclose. Detection tools are unreliable and can accuse honest students, so keep your drafts, notes and chat history. They show how you worked, which is your best evidence.
