OpenRouter sits in front of most major hosted models with one API key and one request format. You stop maintaining separate SDKs and billing relationships when you want to try or mix providers. Per-model prices match the provider's own or come close.

It adds a hop between you and the provider. For latency-sensitive production traffic at scale, go direct and accept the extra integration work. For comparing models or lower-volume use, the convenience wins.

Notes from the author

Look up a model context window and rate limits on the OpenRouter model page. They usually match the provider API. Usually is not always.
