ChatGPT commands for the desktop app
The composer slash commands in the ChatGPT desktop app: switching models, running a review, and working in the cloud or in a git worktree.
Tested on GPT-5 ·
| Command | What it does | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
/model |
Switches the model for the current chat | Set per chat, not globally - check it before a task that needs a specific model |
/reasoning |
Sets the reasoning effort used for the current chat | Higher effort answers slower and costs more, so save it for the step that is actually hard |
/plan |
Turns on plan mode, so ChatGPT proposes a plan before changing anything | Worth doing first on a multi-file change - reading a plan is faster than reviewing a change you did not expect |
/goal |
Sets a persistent objective that ChatGPT keeps working toward across turns, until it finishes or needs input | Shape the goal with /plan first, then hand the refined version to /goal - a vague goal wanders |
/review |
Starts a review of uncommitted changes, or a comparison against a base branch | Run it before committing, not after - a problem is cheaper to catch in the diff than in code review |
/compact |
Compacts the current chat context to free up space | Do this between tasks, not in the middle of a fix |
/status |
Shows the chat ID, context usage and rate limits | Worth checking before a big request if a limit is close |
/mcp |
Opens MCP status to show which servers are connected | The first thing to check when a tool it should have access to does not seem to work |
/worktree |
Runs the chat inside a new git worktree | Keeps a risky change isolated from the branch actually checked out |
/fork |
Copies the current local chat into a new chat or worktree | Try two different approaches from the same point without losing either one |
/init |
Generates a starting AGENTS.md for the current project | Fill in what it could not guess from the repo, the same way you would edit a CLAUDE.md |
You type these into the chat composer of the ChatGPT desktop app. The web chat at chatgpt.com does not have them. The desktop app leans toward coding work, so most of the list covers models, review and isolation and says little about formatting.
Notes from the author
These are composer commands for the desktop app. The ordinary chatgpt.com web chat has its own keyboard shortcuts, covered in a separate cheatsheet on this site.
