Model Context Protocol MCP

An open standard that lets an AI app connect to outside tools and data, such as files, databases or services, through small programs called servers.

MCP defines one common way for an AI app to talk to tools. A server exposes things the model can use, such as reading files, querying a database or searching a ticket system, and the app, called the client, decides which to offer to the model.

The benefit is that a server written once works in several apps. The risk is the access it grants. A server that can write files or send messages can do real damage if the model is tricked by prompt-injection, so give each server the least access it needs.

You install servers in the settings or config file of your app. See installing-plugins-skills-and-extensions for the steps in common tools.
